New Zealand mother of five, Pam Biss, decided she would venture forth around the world on a small boat circumnavigation with her husband, after her children had left home. Reluctant at first, she subsequently sailed for six years and visited 30 countries. She kept a private journal of her experiences and supplemented it with sketches and photos. Her friends became very interested in her journal and, upon her return to New Zealand, persuaded her to have excerpts from it published. Her writings do not pull any punches as to the highs and lows, and the book provides a very realistic account of what the so called "dream" of sailing around the world is really like. Her book also contains many commentaries on aspects which intending short handed sailors wonder about, for example, piracy, the hazards of shipping, on board relationships, "shake down" artists and personal safety, and the type of yacht. If you have ever wondered if you could do it yourself, then there is no better place to start than this book.

Unique tale of small boat circumnavigation...brought back great memories of sailing in faraway places with the "Aiorakis"
Specially loved "Romantic Notion" treatise....forwarded that to many circumnavigator friends! Well done!!!
This is an inspiring read written in a very down to earth & approachable way. There are lots of unique touches throughout the book, with drawings, sailing recipes, & photos, as well as vivid descriptions of life on a yacht & places seen. For those of us who are unlikely to ever do something like this it's a great insight; & for those thinking of going sailing its a highly instructive read.
I very much enjoyed Pam's Journal. I feel as if I have circumnavigated the globe too now! An interesting read for those brave people who have, or plan to, sail around the world in a small boat with a very small crew. I think this account would be of much interest and assistance to them, and also provides a good insight for those of us less courageous who are unlikely ever to do so. Well done Aoraki and crew.
