Thomas Hardy was a man for all seasons. Born near Dorchester to working folks in 1840 he became an architect, artist, historian and through his great novels and poetry one of the world's greatest authors. The Trumpet-Major was written in the 1880's coming immediately after Far From the Madding Crowd which was the author's first big literary triumph. This novel follows the lives of regular persons living in a southern England village at the time of the Napoleonic threat of invasion of the British homeland was the talk of the land. Anne has to decide which brother to love John the Trumpet-Major of the title or his sailor brother Bob. The book is filled with history, romance and humor. Though minor Hardy this novel is well researched, written and will keep your attention. One quibble; The introductions for these Penguin editions seem to be written for literary scholars as they are difficult to understand for many laypersons. A fine novel by a great novelist.

First read Trumpet Major at school 53 years ago. Had difficulty finding it in print so delighted to find it on my . Hardy is a great author if you can click into his style and the landscapes and people jump from the page....in costume too.
Excellent!!!!!
Another gift. I am glad to have a good source for old books.
Love all Thomas Hardy books but this one is taking a long time to get through. I am enjoying it anyway because of his descriptive writing. I can "see" the scenery and people.
A good read for anyone who is a fan of Thomas Hardy. Entertaining read.
I would give any novel Thomas Hardy wrote at least three stars just for his superb language, his historical accuracy, and his enthralling portrait of Wessex. But the characters in this novel just don't compel empathy (e.g. the Festus Derriman character is too decerebrate to take seriously and Anne Garland proves as decisive as the princess bride). At the end of the day, the story is about as effective as Napoleon's invasion of England.
Thomas Hardy's historical novel about the Napoleonic threat to Britain in the early Nineteenth Century. The time different, the feeling of impending war, disruption of normal life, and yet human life proceeds, is always contemporary. Just a beautiful story of people that so real you miss them at the end.
